Armenia has named its first ambassador to Pakistan, a new step in relations between two countries that had no diplomatic ties for more than three decades.
President Vahagn Khachaturyan appointed Karen Grigoryan, Armenia’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, to also serve as ambassador to Pakistan. Grigoryan will be based in Abu Dhabi.

Armenia and Pakistan established diplomatic relations in August 2025 after signing a joint communiqué. The document said both governments would build ties based on the U.N. Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, noninterference in internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.
For years, Pakistan did not recognize Armenia and had no formal relations with Yerevan. Islamabad’s position was closely linked to its alliance with Azerbaijan and the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Pakistani officials had repeatedly said they would not recognize Armenia until the Karabakh issue was settled in Azerbaijan’s favor. The decision to establish ties in 2025 opened the door to formal diplomatic engagement between Yerevan and Islamabad for the first time since Armenia regained independence.
