Diaspora Armenian Gevorg Serobyan Becomes European Champion, Sets Record in Snatch at Weightlifting Championships

At the European Weightlifting Championships held in Batumi, Georgia, Russian-Armenian Gevorg Serobyan delivered one of the strongest performances of the competition, setting a new European record in the snatch event while competing under a neutral flag (for Russia).

In the 79 kg weight category, Serobyan lifted 161 kg in the snatch, securing first place in the discipline. His result not only placed him ahead of the competition but also established a new European record. He outperformed Turkish weightlifter Can Kahraman, who finished in second place, by a margin of 5 kg.

Serobyan’s lift stood out as one of the defining moments of the event, highlighting his technical strength and control on the platform. His successful attempt at 161 kg came with confidence and precision, giving him a clear lead over the rest of the field.

The competition also featured Armenian weightlifter Martin Poghosyan, who competed in the same weight category. Poghosyan secured a bronze medal in the total with a combined result of 338 kg, but the highlight of the snatch discipline remained Serobyan’s record-breaking lift.

The European Weightlifting Championships in Batumi continue to showcase high-level performances, but Serobyan’s achievement has already become one of the key results of the tournament. His new European record further strengthens his position among the top athletes in the sport.
