Serious concerns have emerged over the condition of Vicken Euljekjian, an Armenian-Lebanese citizen who has been illegally held in Baku since November 2020. His family reports that he has not made his usual monthly phone call, raising fears that his health has deteriorated dangerously.
Euljekjian’s family attorney, Luciana Minassian, said in her Facebook post that the lack of contact is alarming, especially because Vicken had recently gone on a hunger strike to protest his unjust imprisonment by Azerbaijani authorities. For years, Euljekjian’s case has been a painful symbol of Azerbaijan’s systematic abuse of Armenian prisoners following the 2020 war against Artsakh.
His family is deeply distressed, noting that Vicken’s physical condition had already been fragile. The silence from him suggests the possibility of serious medical complications. There are growing fears that he may now be in critical condition and urgently needs hospital care.
The family has called on Azerbaijan to immediately allow Vicken to contact them and confirm his well-being. They are demanding access to his medical records and a video message to prove he is still alive and receiving treatment. As of now, Baku has not responded. The refusal to provide even basic information about his health only reinforces Azerbaijan’s ongoing violations of human rights and international law.
Euljekjian’s prolonged detention, despite international appeals, continues to expose the cruelty of Azerbaijan’s policies toward Armenian civilians. His case is one of many that show how Baku uses hostages as political leverage while silencing calls for transparency and justice.
The Armenian community worldwide, along with rights organizations, continues to call for his immediate release. Each day of silence deepens the fear that Vicken’s life may be in danger.
This development comes only weeks after The Armenian Report’s previous coverage on Euljekjian’s hunger strike, where he risked his life to protest his unlawful imprisonment and demand fair treatment. His hunger strike was a desperate cry for freedom and justice — one that the Azerbaijani regime continues to ignore.
Now, with communication cut off and his health uncertain, the world must once again demand answers and hold Azerbaijan accountable for the inhumane treatment of this Armenian captive.
